Oxford and Anti-Semitism

This particular article, Oxford students accused of anti-Semitism over ‘Jewish girls’ party, reminds me just how good America has been to Jews. It may not be perfect here but I don’t here too many stories of things like this happening at home.Maybe I’m just sheltered?

Drop in Conversions

Ynetnews.com notes a drop in the number of people converting to Judaism from other religions in Israel. Gee, could that be because they’ve made it so hard in Israel for people to convert? I’m sure the numbers will drop in America as well.

My Jesus Year

I rarely buy hardcover books by unknown authors. It’s only for the steady stream of authors I’ve come to love that I’m willing to fork over hardcover prices. But then my friend in Atlanta told me about “My Jesus Year.” She couldn’t put it down and she couldn’t stop laughing, she said. The author, Benyamin… Continue reading My Jesus Year

Girl Meets Boy for Unhappily Ever After

Things don’t have to be as complicated as “Friends.” Here’s a new piece I’m working on. I hope I’ll find a place to publish it. I think it definitely has an audience in fellow converts, baalei teshuva, and basically those of us who have had more experience in the non-Orthodox, not Jewish world. I had… Continue reading Girl Meets Boy for Unhappily Ever After

Secular vs. Ultra-Orthodox

While (some) Americans have been celebrating the win of Democract Barack Obama over Republican John McCain here at home, parts of Jerusalem are celebrating their new mayor according to the NY Times article, Secular Defeats Ultra-Orthodox in Jerusalem. While Palestinians boycotted the elections, Jews of all stripes fought along the secular-Orthodox divide. Though my experience… Continue reading Secular vs. Ultra-Orthodox

Color War

In Be honest: does their colour bother you?,” Joe Mintz talks about the racism he sees behind closed doors in the Jewish community. Where does it come from and why does anyone think it’s okay?

Jewminicanos Invade Riverdale

I am not the only Jewminicana. But when I decided to convert, I certainly felt like one. I was the poster child for Jewish Dominican relations in Washington Heights. In fact, I’ve been interviewed as such. But in Riverdale, after a couple of months of living here, my husband had an interesting encounter on the… Continue reading Jewminicanos Invade Riverdale

Check out my t-shirt

“Not appropriate for the Shabbos table” is my favorite line (cue sarcasm). I am going to get a t-shirt with that phrase emblazoned on it (more sarcasm). But honestly, I’m sick of that phrase. I don’t remember having to compartmentalize as much before I decided to become an Orthodox Jew. But after, oh yeah, so… Continue reading Check out my t-shirt

Jew vs. Latina

Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, a novel by Obama supporter and Jewish author Ayelet Waldman, wife of Pulitzer-winning author, Michael Chabon, is being made into a movie. Originally, Jennifer Lopez was set to star but since she bowed out, Natalie Portman has come to the rescue. Of course, the Jewish side of me is happy,… Continue reading Jew vs. Latina
