Sighting: The Black Jew

Walking down the street in Los Angeles, a little blond seven-year-old Jewish girl sees a black Orthodox Jewish man in a black suit, black hat, white shirt and tzitzit flying in the wind.

“Wow, that’s weird,” she says to her mother.

Her white Jewish mother holds her breath waiting for the next statement.

“Did you see that, Mom?” she says tugging on her mother’s sleeve. “That rabbi’s wearing an IPOD!”

  1. Delightful!

You know I went to Mikvah Israel in center city Philly one time and I was the only fair skinned person there – it was sephardic and everyone was either middle eastern or black. It didn't seem that weird to me.

The guy I was with (was a jerk) had to keep mentioning how he'd never seen black jews before…over and over again. What joy.

  2. This reminds me of a story I read once where a white Jewish family had a black repair man fixing something. Their young son runs up to the mom and says, “Mommy, that man isn't Jewish!” and the mother's heart stops, convinced he's picked up a bunch of racist garbage about how black people can't be Jews. But then the kid says, “Because he's not wearing a kippah!”
