Fast forward to the middle of this segment from the Jewish Channel and you’ll hear about the recent ordination of female Orthodox congregational leader, Maharat Sara Hurwitz.
The Mixed Multitudes blog at MyJewishLearning.com commented on the ordination in a piece called “Mahara”t Sara Hurwitz, a “Unique” Woman Rabbi” and the Jewschool blog also offered congratulations in a piece called “This is one of those moments”.
And frequent poster to this blog, Elana, discussed the ordination on her blog in the most stirring post called “More on Orthodox Women Rabbis”.
But I’m surprised that papers like Jewish Week haven’t carried a bigger article on this news and that we have had to settle for this piece that came before the ordination, “Orthodox Women’s Ordination? Even Rabbis Are Split”.
Why aren’t more people talking about this?

i know, i haven’t seen anything about it either. and i was expecting a backlash. glad that so far i only come across positive articles.perhaps we are turning a corner and people are recognizing that its ok. after all, there are many many sources to back it up. also think the term maharat – madricha hilchatit ruchanit toratit, dampened the blow.

I think you’re right, Jude. The title dampened the blow…and the backlash. The RCA didn’t even bother to issue a press release regarding it.

The sad thing about this is that this is essentially a New York City/East Coast development. Out here in the “provinces”, the Midwest, it will have a very limited impact aside from a few isolated circles. In my Sephardic community, it will remain largely off the radar despite Rabbi Maroof’s courageous endorsement of ordaining women within Orthodoxy.

Aliza,Thank you for drawing attention to this momentous occasion. I too was disappointed in the relative lack of press surrounding this event. I was expecting it to make a much bigger “splash”. Although it is noteworthy that, at least over the past several days, the J-Blogosphere has started to pick up on and debate it.

The RCA’s policy on Avi Weiss’s musmachim is very clear. Why should they have to issue another statement?
