Racist! Racist! Racist!

Wow, are things getting heated over Sotomayor’s nomination or what?

I spent last week arguing with my Jewish friends that she, not Benjamin Cardozo, IS the first Hispanic Supreme Justice nominee–more on that in future posts. This week the focus has been whether or not Sotomayor is a racist. Funny isn’t it that when an ethnic minority is proud of their background, it’s called racism? Maybe she was a little too proud of being Latino so they had to figure out a way to bring her down a notch.
So a Latino organization called La Raza, the Latino version of the NAACP that Sotomayor is associated with, has most recently been equated with the KKK and Rush Limbaugh is calling Sotomayor a “reverse racist.”
Watch the first clip by Sotomayor’s detractors and then the second from the president of La Raza.

  1. I’d say Judge Sotomayor needs some coaching in sound bytes. Her choice of words can come off as showing a certain prejudice. I wouldn’t want a judge’s personal background as a factor period, except where education is concerned and how one approaches the Constitution, and perhaps an appreciation of Gilbert and Sullivan 🙂

<>Funny isn’t it that when an ethnic minority is proud of their background, it’s called racism?<>It depends on the context. When someone in the majority is proud of their heritage, it usually is racism.

I would never attribute anything to being white, but I will joke that my sense of thrift is due to being Scottish or be thankful my English ancestors were Norman and not Saxon, or be happy about having Baron’s blood.

  2. I know that this is not the focus of your post but I had never though of Justice Cardozo of as the first Hispanic Justice until a member of my law school class, who happened to be Hispanic, told me he was. So as I have been listening to the news, I have been wondering why no one has been mentioning Cardozo at all. I don't care either way. I think she is going to make a great addition to the Court and look forward to the unnecessary politically based bashing to end.
